Short self-guided Dolomite hike near Cortina d'Ampezzo  

A 4 night - 5 day self-guided trip, hiking through some of the most dramatic Dolomite mountain scenery near Cortina d'Ampezzo, across high plateau and past characteristic craggy peaks, pinnacles and pristine lakes on accessible paths. Accommodation is in one high mountain refuge at 2700 metres with limited numbers of private rooms available, one mountain hotel and first and final nights in Cortina d’Ampezzo. (B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner)

Walking difficulty level: medium – gravel roads and mountain footpaths with some long, steep ups and downs and some narrow sections. 5.5-8 hours hiking per day with limited ski lift access on some days (in season only). Self-guided hiking.

Day 1 - Arrive Cortina – range of hotels available

Day 2 – Valparola/Falzarego-Lagazuoi – a bus journey* takes you to Valparola/Falzarego to start a varied walk with around 1000 metres of up with views of the Travenanzes valleys and some of the most famous peaks in the Dolomites. The last section is across the unusual rocky Lagazuoi high plateau before a last up to Lagazuoi refuge at a breathtaking 2700 metres (1000 metres approx. up, 5 hrs plus). Sleep Rifugio Lagazuoi. Day 3 – Lagazuoi-Giau – continue across the dramatic Lagazuoi plateau  and traverse the Tofana mountain range before a descent and a beautiful panoramic up as far as Averau Refuge initially on a beautiful green pasture path and then on rocky terrain for 400 metres or so of up. The route then continues on straightforward paths downhill to Passo Giau. (7+ hrs, 1300 metres of down, 600 metres up) Sleep Malga Giau. (BD)

Day 4 – Giau-Cortina – this is an extremely attractive and varied walk starting at 2200 metres at Passo Giau involving highly panoramic short ups and downs over two mountain passes and beautiful open mountain meadows to the Croda da Lago lake and refuge and a descent through the forests and hamlets of Cortina (6-7 hours, 400 metres up and 1000 down). Sleep Cortina – range of hotels available. (B)

Day 5 – Leave Cortina. (B)

* N.b. Public buses run from 20th June to 12th Sept approx. but these are general guidelines only and can change even at the last moment. At all other times you will need to get a taxi at your own expense.
