8 day Cortina self-guided trekking circuit

Panoramic self-guided Dolomite trekking circuit around Cortina d'Ampezzo  

A 7 night - 8 day self-guided spectacular week-long trekking circuit in the Dolomites, starting and finishing in pretty Cortina d’Ampezzo on high mountain trails through Alpine pastures, forests and passes with views of some of the most famous pinnacles and spires of the Dolomites including Tre Cime di Lavaredo. A continuous walking route which gives you the Alpine high route experience with modest ups and downs and staying in comfortable hotels with a choice in Cortina and then including a panoramic high mountain hotel, a lakeside lodge and a simple family-run hotel (subject to availability). Luggage transfers are included.

Walking difficulty level: medium – gravel roads and mountain footpaths with reasonable gradients and some narrow steep sections. 4.5-8 hours trekking per day with a ski lift available on the longest days to shorten the walks (in season only).

Day 1: Arrival in Cortina d'Ampezzo – range of hotels available.

Day 2: Walk directly out of Cortina through meadows and forests and up on high mountain paths to your first panoramic Dolomite col at 2000 metres (ski lift option available*) before continuing on well-made paths to a comfortable, traditional style Locanda for an overnight stay (15 km, 700 metres up and down, 6.5/7 hours). Sleep Locanda Ospitale or shuttle back to Cortina d'Ampezzo. (B)

Day 3: An initial even stretch on a cycle path and a dramatic ascent through a rocky gorge brings you out at over 2000 metres (7.5 km, 500 metres up, 3.5/4 hours) once again on the bucolic high pastures of Pratopiazza and your next hotel (Hotel Hohe Gaisl) on a beautiful high plateau. Refuge option available (Rifugio Vallandro). (BD)

Day 4: Climb up to the edge of the plateau before descending gradually on well-made paths of World War One interest with beautiful views of Dolomite peaks and the Austrian Alps to the Landro Valley, before climbing up once more along the Rienza river valley and down briefly to the tiny hamlet of Misurina and its lake (18 km, 1000 metres down, 700 metres up in all, 8 hours) to your hotel (2 nights, Locanda al Lago da Quinz or Grand Hotel Misurina). Day 5: Spectacular, highly panoramic circuit of the famous Tre Cime (9 km, 400 metres approx. up and down, 4/4.5 hours). (B) (Bus round trip - not included)

Day 6: A pretty wooded climb to the base of the beautiful pinnacled Cadini mountains (ski lift option available*) takes you to a panoramic high military track and lunch at a panoramic mountain refuge. Descend through pastures and forests to your next overnight stay at a small hotel, Albergo Al Mughetto (15 km, 400 metres up, 1000 down, 6-5/7 hours). (BD)

Day 7: Shuttle to the start of the walk 10 minutes (included). Return to Cortina through the serene open pastures of Val Bona and dappled larch forests, climbing initially to Passo Tre Croci and lunch before traversing the Faloria massif with beautiful views over the Cortina bowl and down to the town itself through forests and hamlets to Cortina again (15 km, 450 metres up, 600 down, 6-6.5 hours). High walk option available. Sleep Cortina – range of hotels available. (B)

Day 8: Leave Cortina d'Ampezzo. (B)

* N.b. Ski lifts run from 22nd June to 15th Sept approx. but these are general guidelines only and can change even at the last moment.
