9 DAY CORTINA SELF-GUIDED HUT TO HUT WALKING CIRCUIT

Spectacular self-guided hut to hut Dolomite walking tour  

A 8 night - 9 day self-guided walking trip in the best Dolomites, starting and finishing in Cortina d’Ampezzo and walking through some of the most dramatic mountain scenery, across high plateau and past classic Dolomite craggy peaks, pinnacles and pristine lakes on accessible paths following sections of famous Alta Via 1. Optional World War One circular walk. Accommodation is in four high mountain refuges, one at 2700 metres, with some private rooms available, one mountain hotel and first and final nights in Cortina d’Ampezzo. (B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner) Part circuit options available.

Walking difficulty level: medium – gravel roads and mountain footpaths with some long, steep ups and downs and some narrow sections. 5.5-8 hours plus walking per day with limited ski lifts access on some days (in season only). Best self-guided walks in the Dolomites.
Luggage transfers available at considerable extra cost.

Day  1 – Arrive Cortina d'Ampezzo – range of hotels available.

Day 2 – Cortina-Malga Ra Stua - walk directly out of Cortina initially through its hamlets and then uphill on forest paths (cable car option*) before emerging on an ultra-panoramic levelish wide gravel track with pretty views down to Cortina and of its mountains and then upping and downing past the dramatic Fanes waterfalls to Malga Ra Stua refuge. 900 metres up, 400 down 7 hrs+. Day 3 – Malga Ra Stua - Sennes – a beautiful 5 hour walk up to and around the Sennes high plateau past pristine mountain lakes and through unusual geological features and pastures with an initial sharp up and then further ups and downs on the plateau. 8-900 metres of up. Sleep Rifugio Sennes. (B)

Day 4 – Sennes-Fanes – an initial down on wide gravel roads and then up to the unusual Fanes plateau with spectacular and varied views on mountain footpaths and wide gravel tracks (600 metres up, 5-6 hours). Sleep Rifugio Fanes. (B)

Day 5 – Fanes-Lagazuoi - after initially continuing along the Fanes plateau past pristine mountain lakes, a sharp up takes you to the breathtaking austere Lagazuoi plateau at 2700 metres surrounded by some of the most famous peaks in the Dolomite to the dramatically situated Lagazuoi refuge (1000 metres up, 7 hours +). Sleep Rifugio Lagazuoi, 2 nights. (BD)

Day 6 – World War 1 circuit - take the cable car down to Falzarego pass for a short World War One themed walk around Sass di Stria with panoramic views, interesting Austrian trenches, shelters and tunnels, a short down in an Austrian supply tunnel and then a brief up and down to return to the pass past Italian trenches (4-5 hours, 350 m up and down). Cable car and head torches/helmets required – not included. (BD)

Day 7 – Lagazuoi-Giau – continue across the dramatic Lagazuoi plateau  and traverse the Tofana mountain range before a descent and a beautiful panoramic up as far as Averau Refuge initially on a beautiful green pasture path and then on rocky terrain for 400 metres or so of up. The route then continues on straightforward paths downhill to Passo Giau. (7+ hrs, 1300 metres of down, 600 metres up) Sleep Hotel Passo Giau. (BD)

Day 8 – Giau-Cortina – this is an extremely attractive and varied walk starting at 2200 metres at Passo Giau involving highly panoramic short ups and downs over two mountain passes and beautiful open mountain meadows to the Croda da Lago lake and refuge and a descent through the forests and hamlets of Cortina (6-7 hours, 400 metres up and 1000 down). Day 9 – Leave Cortina d'Ampezzo. (B)

* N.b. The cable car runs from 20th June to 20th Sept approx. but these are general guidelines only and can change even at the last moment.
