Marmarole hiking circuit

A panoramic hiking route in the heart of the Dolomites, exploring the Cadore valley and the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo  

A spectacular 6 day - 5 night, ultra-panoramic circuit of the Marmarole massif in the beautiful Cadore valley, hiking from mountain hut to mountain hut, with a final two days overlooking Lake Misurina and a circuit of the world-famous Tre Cime peaks. This is a medium-hard hiking route with strenuous sections for those looking for an authentic Dolomite hiking experience in a lesser known valley, staying at traditional friendly mountain huts.
  • Walking difficulty level: medium-hard - gravel roads and mountain footpaths with reasonable gradients and some narrow steep sections. Short sections of this route may worry acute vertigo sufferers. These have been equipped with iron cables for additional safety and are short.
  • 4.5-7.5 hours hiking per day.
  • Hotel accommodation consists of comfortable family run hotels in Auronzo di Cadore and Misurina and two panoramic traditional high mountain huts with simple shared room accommodation and bathrooms.
  • Luggage transfers from Auronzo to Misurina included.

Day 1 - Pick up at Venice Marco Polo airport / Venice Mestre train station for a 2 hour drive to stay in the lesser known Cadore valley at pretty Auronzo di Cadore - stay at family run 3-star Hotel Cacciatori. Dinner at the hotel. (LD)

Day 2 - An initial ski lift ride from Auronzo town to continue on an ultra-panoramic hike, initially through forests and then traversing the Marmarole massif through pastures. After an initial altitude gain of 600 metres the route ups and downs relatively gently all the way to Rifugio Chiggiato with panoramic views throughout. 15 km, 6.5/7 hrs. Stay at pretty family run mountain refuge Rifugio Chiggiato and dinner at the refuge. (BLD)

Day 3 - A steep down in forest to continue on an hour-long, relatively even stretch on a gravel road before climbing 900 metres to panoramic Rifugio Galassi on a narrow mountain path. After a further short up and down, the path levels out to continue traversing with short ups and downs and ultra-panoramic views of the Marmarole and Antelao massifs and down to San Vito town. 16 km, 900 metres of up, 1000 metres down, 7 hrs plus. Stay and eat at classic, friendly Dolomite mountain hut Rifugio San Marco. (BLD)

Day 4 - An initial sharp up on a narrow zigzagging scree slope mountain path to 360 degree views from Forcella Grande mountain col, before a long and varied descent on narrow mountain paths along a panoramic valley and then on narrow forest paths to beautiful Foresta di Somadida forest reserve. The last section of the walk in on a wide cycle track, 16 km, 400 metres up, 1100 down, 6.5/7 hrs approx. Transfer to your lakeside lodge at Misurina (2 nights) and eat at the lodge. (BLD)

Day 5 - A short drive takes us to the most famous walk in the Dolomites, the spectacular, highly panorami circuit of the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo on wide gravel tracks and rocky mountain paths with short ups and downs throughout, 13 km, 650 metres up and down, 6-6.5 hrs. Dinner in a local moutnain dairy. (BLD)

Day 6 - A 2.5 hour drive takes us back to Venice airport / Venice Mestre train station. (B)

  • all meals - breakfast, lunch at mountain refuges, a packed lunch and multi-course dinners with wine in interesting local restaurants or hotels (B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner);
  • all transport - to/from Venice airport adn to/from walks where relevant in mini buses (or cars depending on group size);
  • baggage transfer from the first to the last hotel only - no luggage transfers to the huts;
