5 day self-guided hiking circuit around Marmarole

SHORT SELF-GUIDED HIKE IN THE DOLOMITES  

A spectacular 3 day-4 night, ultra-panoramic circuit of the Marmarole massif in the beautiful Cadore valley, walking from mountain hut to mountain hut. This is a medium-hard trekking route for those looking for an authentic Dolomite hiking experience in a lesser known valley, staying at traditional friendly mountain huts. (B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner)

Walking difficulty level: medium-hard- short sections of this route may worry acute vertigo sufferers. These have been equipped with iron cables for additional safety and are short. 6.5-7 hours hiking per day with some limited ski lift access in season only.

Day 1 - Stay at pretty Auronzo di Cadore with its lake - range of hotels available.

Day 2 - Auronzo - Rifugio Chiggiato - An ultra-panoramic hike from Auronzo's Monte Agudo upper ski lift station (ski lift not included) or close to Auronzo town, initially through forests and then traversing the Marmarole massif through pastures. After an initial altitude gain of 650-1100 (depending on whether you use the ski lift) the route ups and downs relatively gently all the way to Rifugio Chiggiato with panoramic views throughout. 6.5-7 hrs depending on route. Stay at pretty family run Rifugio Chiggiato. (BD)

Day 3 - Rifugio Chiggiato - Rifugio San Marco - A steep down in forest to continue on an hour-long, relatively even stretch on a gravel road before climbing 900 metres to panoramic Rifugio Galassi on a narrow mountain path. After a further short up and down the path levels out to continue traversing with short ups and downs and ultra-panoramic views of the Marmarole and Antelao massifs, 900 metres of up, 1000 metres down, 7 hrs plus. Stay at classic, friendly Dolomite mountain hut Rifugio San Marco. Day 4 - Rifugio San Marco - Auronzo - An initial sharp up on a narrow zigzagging scree slope mountain path to 360 degree views from Forcella Grande mountain col, before a long and varied descent on narrow mountain paths along a panoramic valley and then on narrow forest paths to beautiful Foresta di Somadida forest reserve. The last section of the walk is on a wide cycle track, 400 metres up, 1100 down, 5.5 hrs approx. Stay at friendly family run hotel, Il Mughetto near Somadida forest. (BD)

Day 5 - Continue your journey back to Auronzo by bus (or bike/e-bike on the easy downhill cycle track!) or on to Misurina or Cortina. (B)

Dates available: the ski lifts on this trip run from approximately 20th June to 20th September and the refuges have similar opening dates.
